THE FRESHMAN FIFTEEN IS FAR TOO REAL. APPROXIMATELY 70% OF STUDENTS HAVE SOME FORM OF WEIGHT GAIN IN COLLEGE. MOST FRESHMAN GAIN WEIGHT BECAUSE THEIR EATING HABITS CHANGE (I DID!). SEE BELOW FOR 3 EFFECTIVE HABITS TO AVOID THE DREADED FRESHMAN FIFTEEN.
1) STAY HYDRATED
Drink plenty of water!!! I cannot stress this enough. Instead of grabbing a soda have some water. If water is too plain for you then try fruit-infused water. Personally, I love strawberry-lemon infused water because the flavor is not too strong. Forming a habitt to drink plenty of water will help you avoid gaining weight. According to Women’s Health Magazine, drinking water can boost your workouts, fasten your metabolism, increase your energy, stops cravings, and prevents you from drinking sugary unhealthy drinks. Many freshman start drinking late-night sodas and energy drinks which really adds on the pounds! Forming a habit to stay hydrated throughout the day is an easy and effective way to prevent the freshman fifteen.
2) Stop eating late-night meals and snacks
You will regret midnight dinners and snacks. Late-night eating sounds great at the time however, it is shown to be associated with weight gain. The Washington Post reported, when you eat before bed, your body stores the calories rather than burning it into energy. After you have been studying for countless hours it might seem like a good idea to order Domino’s Pizza from their app however, you will regret it! To avoid late-night cravings ensure you are eating throughout the day. Also, staying hydrated will help prevent cravings.
3) STAY ACTIVE
In college, you will be doing a lot of sitting in classrooms, the library, and studying. It is important to stay active to prevent the freshman fifteen. Instead of taking the bus to class you can walk or ride a bike. Many colleges offer an on-campus fitness center or gym however, if yours does not there are plenty of workouts you can do right in your dorm or apartment.
